“The turbulent
60’s gave birth to all kinds
of fads and fun, but one of the most
interesting toys to come out of that
turbulent decade was the slot car.
With its roots in earlier wind-up
cars, the slot car was an exciting
marriage of wheels and electricity
that reached its apex during the 1960’s.
Slot cars brought kids and adults
closer than ever to the dream of owning
and operating their very own racers”-a
brief passage from Vintage Slot Cars
by Phillippe de Lispinay.
A Slot Car Raceway has existed in
these premises since the mid to late
sixties. We are located in James Lane
Waitara NSW. Click here for the Whereis
map. We believe the original business
was established by a Kevin Thurston
who built an 8 lane banked track and
a smaller, but decidedly more challenging
10 lane flat track. Both tracks were
coin operated and 15 minutes cost
20 cents.
Today the business maintains a remarkable
similarity in the sense that it offers
two 8 Lane Garry Johnson built tracks,
one is a 182 foot Johnson Hill Climb
and the other a 108 Foot Johnson Road
course. Both tracks are electronically
controlled and feature lap counters
and timers in hire mode. These tracks
are to be supplemented shortly by
a new Ninco 1/32 scale Digital Raceway.
Read more about the tracks here.
Inside you will find a well stock
shop catering for 1/24, 1/32 and HO
enthusiasts. We endeavor to carry
the latest 1/24 speed secret from
manufacturers such as Koford Engineering,
Alpha, Cahoza, and Slick7, and are
continually expanding our range of
1/32 Cars and sets from the likes
of Ninco, Scalextric, Fly, SCX and
Revell.
We maintain a comprehensive racing
program catering for standard 1/32
cars right up to the lightning fast
1/24 G7 Wingcars and a week doesn’t
go by without a birthday party or
a community group on the 110 foot
track. So if you have children that
are seven and looking for a birthday
party with a difference, or if your
nearing 70 but raced slots when you
were a kid and would love to have
a go again you are welcome at Hornsby
Slot Cars.
